When I visited the places and sacred lands of Native people, I felt something awaken within me. I began to believe that I had found myself as a teenage Red Indian girl, seeing the world through her eyes. I asked myself, what would I write if I were like her, living close to nature, carrying the wisdom of the earth? With that thought, I drew this picture and wrote the poem as a way of honoring her voice, her spirit, and the timeless connection between land, identity, and belonging.
Song of the soil
The land I belong to is sacred,
it's heartbeat echoing in my own.
My eyes wander, searching the horizon,
yearning for the soil that calls me home.
Nature cradles me as its child
the forest, my breath; the river, my song.
It is my love, my entirety,
the place where my spirit rests strong.
Here I find peace in every leaf,
in the whisper of wind, in the fire’s glow.
This is where I belong, forever,
the voice of a Red Indian girl,
rooted in earth, sky, and soul.
The Bird’s Cry in a Concrete World
I am the bird who wants to fly free in the sky… but I can’t find a nest anymore.
Where are the trees?
Why is everything becoming brick and concrete?
They cut down the forests that once held my home.
My family, are they already extinct?
Please… save me.
Save the planet.
Plant a tree.
